The City of Liberty Electrical Department is responsible for maintaining the City's power distribution systems and substations.  The city, which owns its own electricity distribution system, purchases energy wholesale from the Sam Rayburn Municipal Power Agency [SRMPA] under a contract through Entergy.  SRMPA is a power consortium jointly owned by the cities of Liberty, Livingston and Jasper.
The Electrical Department is located at 1100 N. Main in the Public Works Service Center.  The Department consists of well-trained employees that include supervisors, linemen and an equipment operator.  In addition to maintaining the electricity distribution system, the department is also responsible for maintaining security and street lighting, responding to electrical outages, tree trimming to prevent power outages, and handling customer requests and resolutions.

About the Electrical System

The Sam Rayburn Municipal Power Agency presently operates and maintains two electrical substations and one transmission line. The transmission system consists of a network of approximately two miles of lines that tie the substations together. The distribution system is owned by and maintained by the City of Liberty, which originates at the two substations, consists of some 32 miles of overhead and 10 miles of underground distribution lines.
As of 2014, the City served 2869 residential and 836 commercial customers.  Although the vast majority of Liberty residents receive power through the City, small population areas within the City limits are Entergy customers.
